Smoking
Ban on College Campuses
Andrew Bratcher
Abstract
Recently, in the public, smoking has been banned in many
places due to the negative health effects and irritability of it to the non-smoking
population. College campuses such as,
UofL, have not banned smoking, but this study was to see if college students
would rather have it banned or stay apparent.
Introduction
Recent studies have shown that smoking can damage the
brain and memory due to high blood pressure.
Also the effects of secondhand smoke is a nuisance to others around who
do not smoke. Although at UofL, smoking
is not encouraged, there is no enforced rule to stop it.
This study asks students around campus whether or not
smoking should be banned on campus and why.
Whether it be due to academic reasons or just to stop an unhealthy habit
among students.
Method
A survey was created and sent out to 20 various
college students. With luck all of them
replied to the three question survey.
Each question had the answers of Yes, No, or No Opinion as well as a
comments section.
Results
Out of the 20 students. 5 students answered question one, which was
the essential question, (Do you think that smoking should be banned from
college campuses?) with no, 3 with yes, and the majority of 12 with no
opinion. The next two questions were
almost exact with the same number of results.
With no opinion being at the highest point, this has
lead me to believe that smoking on campus is not as big of a deal as it may be
pursued to be.
Discussion
These results again has led to proof that smoking on
campus is not a huge problem in the college society. I believe that the option of answering no
opinion on the survey was in fact vital because many people do not seem to care
much about an issue like this. It is
based on the freedom of others and shows people respect other people’s freedom
within certain boundaries, which the university provides.

IMRaD Questions
Do you think they should ban smoking on campus? Why?
How would you feel if smokers had designated areas in campus to smoke?
Do you think banning smoking on campus will help smokers quit?
What pros and cons would banning smoking provide?
Does this even affect you?
Would this ban include E-Cigs as well?

IMRaD Plan
Do you think organ selling should be legalized and regulated?
Do you think that campus should completely eliminate smoking on campus?
I plan on asking around to about 20 people one of these questions and with this poll receiving the primary information. Along with just simply asking these questions I am going to ask people why they believe this to get a more in depth answer form them. The second question seems more likely being that I will be taking my poll on campus and it is more relatable.
I will then take my information and turn it into a report. I will then research more about the topics (which ever one I choose) and see how other research has been affected by these questions.

IMRaD Assignment
The difference in a research paper and a report is that you have to go and find the information through primary research. You have to go out and actually find your research through interview and polls. Although there is secondary research involved later in the paper most of the information is found by interview. It seems like this paper is more personal because for me personally, I'm asking an opinionated question which should spark some good thought.
Hopefully there are a lot of people who know about organ donation and have a view on whether it should be regulated or not. I could ask if people would sell an organ if they really needed the money and by making it personal it should help get some people thinking more about the topic giving me better results.

Remediation Reflection
This remediation project was something I have never really been conscious of doing before. I have done something like this in my previous works in school but never understood that I was actually revising and changing the media of information I had already written about. It was a good way to realize that most of the information that we obtain is remediated in some form way.
The purpose of this remediation project was to change the media of a research paper we had written in order to present the information differently. I kept the exact information, I just shortened it to make it more simplistic and added pictures for visual stimulation. The point was to show how information can be changed in format in order to be presented in a different way. Everything was exactly the same besides the way the information was presented. I enjoyed changing it up into a prezi as well because it's a much more enjoyable way of presenting the information. My audience was the same as my paper. The design I wanted was something relatable to the topic. I went for a cell design in order to be parallel with the idea of cloning which would involve cloning cells. I used pictures in order to relate to cloning as well. All in all the remediation was to show that information could be transformed into a new view.

Reflection 3/26
Mason and Jacob helped tell me what things I needed to improve my prezi. I knew I needed to use pictures and increase the data on my slides. I was trying to keep my slides short but I made them a little too short. Once I add pictures and citations along with improving my information then my prezi will be complete. With the information now I can make it to the 8 minute mark but I feel it needs to be a little bit longer. Maybe I should tweak my organization just a little bit. I need to adjust my text size according to the room size as well.

Remediation Assignment
Remediation seems to me like it is just a visual display of a paper. It is another example of something that has already been written about. An example is what one of the readings said or a from of new media. I like the example it gave as to where a book was turned into a movie. The movie was a new type of media and a good visual example of the novel and it is a new media because it is a new revised version of the old novel.
With these two writings, I seem to be understanding that its just a revised version of an original piece. Multimedia and the constant search for the revival of old things is a form of remediation. We like when things are remade into the new visual form because we are a visual species. Remediation is just the answer to that.

Topic Brainstorming
The topic I am really thinking about is cloning and whether it should be allowed or stay banned. I don't know much of the effects of cloning such as the health of the clone or other important aspects such as that, and I currently do not have a stance on cloning. I am hoping to learn a lot about this topic because I have heard it tossed around multiple times in biology class. It sounds quite controversial and obviously very interesting. I do know that the first successful clone was Dolly the sheep and that there are other types of animals that have been cloned. I would enjoy researching the health of the clones and the success rate of the cloning. Current cloning events haven't passed through my ear either but I'm sure there is more out there to find that are relatively new.
Just another thought, organ donation and regulation would be a great topic as well. This I do have a stance on which is that I believe it should be legal. This would help save many lives and could benefit so many people. I don't know much of the negative side of this topic but I feel more good can come from it than bad.

Research Papers Compare and Contrast
To compare the two research papers on quotations and citations, both broke down the topics they were talking about. They went over how to breakdown either the full paper, or just how to cite a source without following the "rules" of MLA. They both covered their topics really well and I gained something from both of them. They both ended up having similar source techniques it was just that the outline based paper had more official citations.
Differences in these two medias is that one goes over outlining a paper while the other goes over citations. It seemed like the one that went over the outline didn't really have much information on citations. It was better for helping how to organize a research paper. The video was just all about how to cite a cereal box on your own when not all of the right source resources are available.

Reflection Assignment 1
In the first assignment, I learned how to better understand writing in my field of study. I've never taken the time to step back and reflect on the nature of writing in biology until this assignment. I mainly considered writing in biology to be a completely formal area of writing until I learned the different types of informal, or nonacademic writing such as pamphlets at a science museum. I also learned how to better source things and how to quote pieces from sources and interviews which will be important down the road.
As I said before, most of my assumptions were that writing in biology were purely formal and that was definitely challenged. Although, my assumptions for the types of academic writing were almost spot on when discussing the types of paper and styles within those papers. During my interview is where most of my assumptions were supported and only once was my assumption of nonacademic writing proven otherwise because the interviewee brought up note taking as a nonacademic form of writing.
Challenges of this paper were finding good sources that gave me some good information about the nature of writing and I couldn't really find any amazing sources that provided me with the true information I was looking for, so to overcome that I just worked with what I had. The paper could have been much stronger with better sources.
Now as a writer I would say that am weak in using the information I have into a more detailed and expressed way. I could have probably used better vocab as well in order to spice up and enlighten my paper. Strengths would be that I believe I had a pretty sufficient introduction. Also I think I did well with the information I was given and I made that the best that I could.
I thought that the group conference was useful to the point where we met with our peers before we set up schedules with our partners. So basically to me the best way I see fit for us to do papers and conferences are to do one class with a small peer review with our peers and schedule conferences for 15 minutes another day. That way we can have more time with you and also get another set of eyes on our paper another day.

"Organ Sales Will Save Lives" Analysis
The thesis states that organ donations should be regulated, not banned. The way the author supports this thesis is by giving the negative side of not regulating the sells of organs, such as the increase of death of people in need of a new organ. Then she addresses the counter argument and what they would be likely to say. She then uses another argument against the counter argument to shoot it down. Finally she reinforces the ideas and positive aspects of her thesis. With this clean sense of organization she is able to get her point across clearly and effectively.

Biology is a very interesting and broad topic in which I
chosen as my field of study. Writing in
biology can come from writing lab reports to simply writing out a patient’s
diagnosis and how to care for them. My
assumption of writing in biology comes from what I have really had to do in the
past based on writings in my biology classes.
With my experience, I have had to write reports based on the research
that I have found through experimentation and comparison through other
scientists or students work, which you current students have probably had much
experience in. Also, the writing mainly
seems formal and professional. I have
found great sources that both accept and challenge my assumptions, as well as
two interviewees, one being a biology teacher, the other a current grad student
going into medical school. The
information from both of the interviews and sources can help me explain the
nature of writing in this field of study and compare my assumptions to be
either correct or not.
To begin, as I have stated before, my assumptions were
that writing in biology are mainly just lab reports based on research. My first interviewee, Nathan Deasy, mentions
that “most of the writing I have had to do is based on research. Science is all about research through
experimentation. Its how we find the
answers to the scientific questions we have.”(Deasy) What I took from him
saying this was not only that my assumption was very accurate but that a lot of
the writing would be extremely formal.
Experimentation is not something to take very lightly if you want to be
able to find promising results. Of
course the informal nature of scientific writing could be the notes you write
down in a lab. They are for your eyes
not for a committee or group of scholars which I learned is different from my
assumption. I enjoy how one of my
sources states to “clearly distinguish results from discussion.” (Scientific
Writing 101) Basically, what I got from
this is that you should keep formal and informal pieces apart in this type of
writing. Which I believe is an important
part in the nature of writing in biology.
Now, my second interviewee is an old biology teacher from
high school, Kathi Heggs. When talking to
her, she reminded me that “writing in class was nothing short of just finding
out information, and expressing that information in a professional way.”(Heggs) We had to write many reports on notes we had
taken in class on the different experiments we had done. This report would then be reported to the
class in a presentation. Each writing
had to be set up in the same basic style in a report form. Using clear, precise wording was mandatory
and it is as you continue to write in this field of study. Also it is important to use past tense
because when writing either a report or research paper it reflects work that
has been completed (Bates University)
These two points are very important aspects especially on the professional
aspect of the pieces in biology or scientific writing.
When it comes to the less formal pieces in scientific
writing, things that could be examples would be like a pamphlet for a science
museum. It is informal because it isn’t
written for scholars in any way but more towards a casual audience. Facts and reason are still included in these
pieces, but because of the more creative and less serious tone of these
writings, they are informal. There are
different goals when it comes to an informal piece in writing in biology. Research isn’t really required because if it
is for a museum per say, then it would be more of writing down and listing
facts that have already been researched or discovered. It is non academic writing. This style of writing is extremely relaxed in
a casual manner.

Suggestion Reflection
In our groups we discussed...
1.I learned while discussing our recent summaries is that our sources need to be very relevant to our field of study that shows a good example of writing in that field.
2. I also learned more clearly what a scholarly piece is in contrast to an academic piece. Peer review is the main key in the contrast.
3. I was suggested that one of my sources wasn't very useful and that I should look for something more reliable. I will most likely look for more scholars that compare to my more reliable sources written by a more credible writer.
4. When finding a source using something that is in your field of study that compliments your writing and gives you proof.
5. Then we need to organize our papers. One way is to use the interview as a sort of an intro into the sources and use the conversation and answers as a way to explain the sources more and introduce them.

Interview Summary and Source Analysis
For my interview, I decided to interview a friend and graduate student with a bachelors degree in bio, Nathan Deasy. We sat down together and discussed how writings in the field of biology were usually like, and I can say it was nothing less of what I Expected him to say. Being a biology major, I've come across a few papers here in my short time at UofL that are similar to what he brought up in our conversation. A lot of the writings are research based. You either have to find the evidence of whatever your topic might be or feed off of someone else information. He said it was similar to what you do in other subjects besides the fact that its more based on statistical research or experimentation, which is in a lot if the pieces.
For my three sources, the first source I'm going to use is Scientific Writing 101, which is an article I found online. It takes you through the process of writing scientific papers and it helps you understand the process of writing better.
The next source is online called Passive Voice in Scientific Writing. It is similar to the other paper as it goes through the same processes. The good thing about this piece is it even gives example papers to show a better understanding of the ways of writing in this field.
Finally, I'm going to to use one of my old papers I typed in one of my old biology classes. Looking at old work and look at what was expected of me in my writing will help me go back and understand the nature of writing in biology.

Andrew Bratcher- Source Assignment
My field I am interested in is biology so my example would be a biology report. The type of genre my field mainly consists of is informative. It shows data collected to help prove and support the experiments the piece was over. It also goes through procedures in detail.
This source will help my writing because it is a good example of the way most biology reports are written. It gave a lot of proof in the piece too. I liked this piece too because it showed diagrams which a lot of my field of writing consists of. This shows what type of work I will be doing and the style of writing very well.

Rhetorical Siutation Assignment
For this assignment, my interviews will be biology related students or professors because this is going to be my field of study.
My purpose will be that to learn more about this current field to see what kind of opportunities I would gain from studying this field. I have goals on what I want to gain from it but to learn of more opportunities would be great.
My audience will be high school students who are interested in what this current field of study leads into and what is done if turned into a profession.
This is going to be an informational analysis paper that will use interviews as its main source of information which could make it more personal.

Rhetorical Situation
Created by Lloyd Blitzer, Rhetorical situation has three main components: Subject, composer, and audience. When writing there is no true order that writers pick to use these techniques in writing but all writers use these components as a set up for writing.
Audience is is the writing is for. Subject is the content which can also be the issue, and composer is who is writing and the stance of the writer and what constraints does the writer face.
